DESCRIPTION OF PRESENTATION/WORKSHOP

Too often therapy gets bogged down in talk, repeatedly viewing a client’s life through the lens of psychopathology in ways that diminish rather than enhance the possibility for connection and change. In this workshop, we’ll explore Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), an approach that begins by focusing on “glimmers of growth” and closely tracks subtle shifts in clients’ moment-to-moment experience, with the goal of following the edge of emergent transformational experience. Videotapes of actual AEDP sessions will illustrate how to help clients recognize and express the implicit messages of their internal states and invite them to witness and accept, rather than avoid, their emotional processes. You’ll see how to “make the implicit explicit and the explicit experiential” in ways that, though subtle, turbo-charge the change process and give rise to transformational spirals where more begets more. We’ll discuss how the AEDP approach to dyadic mindfulness and meta-processing can make clients more receptive to empathic connection, engender a sense of secure attachment, and deepen the therapeutic bond.
